PROPER SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT: Approach to clean the esteros of Pasig River
The people’s minimal regard to the estero is one of the
vital reasons why it became a dumping ground.
To alter the mindset of the people, ABS-CBN Foundation
Inc.’s Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig, together with its partners, conducted
house-to-house campaigns, storytelling with children, and seminars on proper
waste management and water quality to propagate Republic Act 9003 known as
Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and Republic Act 9275 or the Clean Water
Act. Different schools and organizations do regular clean-ups of esteros.
Students from De La Salle University interviewed
residents in Barangay 386 and 646 in Manila as part of a household survey to
determine how many households practice at-source waste segregation.
They also conducted story-telling with kids on proper
solid waste management.
Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) were installed in
Mandaluyong, PUP Sta. Mesa, Sta. Ana, Quezon City and Baseco. An MRF grinds
recyclable wastes, which can be used as extenders for pavers.
Reviving the lifeline of our nation may be a daunting
task. But because it gives hope to people who were once in despair and it
brings back the life of once dying esteros, Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig will
continue to enjoin everyone to revive the historic river.
