Lights Up, Sounds Down: Creating a More Inclusive Cinema Experience at SM
Last Saturday, SM Cares, in partnership with the Autism Society Philippines, held Lights Up, Sounds Down (LUSD) at SM Megamall in celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week—opening the doors of SM Cinema wider for persons on the autism spectrum and their families.
The sensory-friendly movie screening was thoughtfully designed to provide a more comfortable and inclusive cinema experience. With slightly raised lights and lowered sound levels, LUSD helped reduce sensory overload, allowing families to enjoy a movie in a space where they could feel safe, relaxed, and understood. For many, it wasn’t just about watching a film—it was about finally being able to share a simple, joyful family moment without anxiety.
Inclusivity is always at the heart of initiatives like this. When public spaces are intentionally adapted, they become places where everyone can belong. LUSD is a powerful reminder that small adjustments, grounded in empathy, can create meaningful impact for families and communities.
This initiative reinforces SM’s commitment to creating safe, accessible, and welcoming spaces for all, aligning with its continuing advocacy to be a true Mall for All. By empowering communities through inclusive and thoughtful programs, SM continues to prove that everyone deserves a place where they feel seen, valued, and welcome—right here, at your most loved SM mall.
